Two dogs pulled from a burning home on Leodra Lane in west Phoenix were revived with pet oxygen equipment Sunday night, September 20, according to Phoenix Fire Department information reported by AZFamily.
Crews arrived shortly before 10 p.m. and found heavy smoke and flames. Firefighters searched the house while working to extinguish the fire, then carried out two dogs suffering from smoke inhalation. Both were taken to an animal hospital after receiving oxygen.
No people were inside, and no human injuries were reported. Four residents were displaced. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
What the FIDO equipment does
The equipment used by crews was described as Fido bags. The Fetch Foundation, which operates the FIDO Bag program, says its essential kit for municipal fire departments includes a reusable oxygen mask designed to fit animals ranging from small pets to large dogs.
That is equipment for emergency responders, rather than a substitute for veterinary care. In this rescue, the next step after oxygen was the hospital transfer. The reporting reviewed for this article did not provide a later update on either dog.
