Familiarity changed the result
The clearest difference appeared when dogs watched their own owners. Their blink rates were higher when the owner blinked than when the owner kept a still gaze. The researchers did not find the same effect with the unfamiliar people in the videos.
That difference is why the authors point to social relevance rather than blinking alone. The study suggests that the identity of the person mattered to the dogs' response. It does not establish what the dogs felt or what any individual blink meant.
The dogs did not blink in exact sync
The team also checked whether a dog was especially likely to blink shortly after the person on screen blinked. It found no significant evidence of that precise timing. A higher overall blink rate and exact moment by moment copying are different findings.
Possible explanations include attention, automatic mimicry and broader social processes. The study was not designed to choose one of those explanations as the final answer. More work using live, responsive interactions would be needed to test them.
What dog owners should take from the study
The useful takeaway is modest. Dogs pay close attention to human faces, and even a small movement may be processed differently when it comes from a familiar person. This does not create a new test for a dog's mood, bond or intentions.
A single blink should not be read in isolation. Posture, movement, the setting and what happened immediately before it all matter when trying to understand a dog. The new paper adds one controlled result to that larger picture rather than providing a blink dictionary.
