A dog was brought out alive after falling about 50 feet into an abandoned well in Anderson County, South Carolina, early Monday, September 21, according to the West Pelzer Fire Department’s account reported by FOX Carolina.
The call came around 12:30 a.m. Crews determined that the air inside the well required a rescuer to use supplied air before entering. One rescuer descended, secured the dog and brought it back to the surface, where it was reunited with its owners.
The rescue required more than a rope
The department’s description identifies a second hazard beyond the depth of the shaft: the atmosphere inside it. The report does not identify a particular gas or give an oxygen reading, so the reason for the supplied air equipment cannot be made more specific.
