Animal control officers removed 21 dogs from a boarding property in Manorhaven, New York, after police responded to a report of sick animals. ABC7 reported the removal and the operator's denial of neglect on September 9.

North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena told News 12 that the dogs had been taken to the town shelter for care. Police described signs of neglect; DeSena said the animals had lacked food and water and were in soiled cages.

The operator told ABC7 she had been out of town and believed employees were caring for the dogs. She disputed allegations that she had neglected them. ABC7 reported no charges in the Manorhaven case at the time of its September 9 account.

Shelter intake doesn't establish adoption availability

Town officials told News 12 that some of the dogs were being boarded for owners. Their removal therefore shouldn't be treated as an announcement that all 21 dogs are available to adopt.
