Susan Berry has been charged with animal neglect following the removal of animals from a Lawrence County, Missouri, property, KY3 reported October 1. The charge is an allegation, not a conviction.
First Alert 4 reports that the rescue finished around 2 a.m. September 30 with 170 animals removed: 101 dogs, five cats, 11 horses, three goats, three ducks and 47 chickens. That updates the Humane Society of Missouri’s initial estimate of more than 100 animals.
What investigators allege
KY3 also cites a separate probable cause statement alleging that Berry stole a Catahoula Leopard Dog reported missing earlier this year. Its report does not establish a separate theft charge. Investigators say further charges could follow the state investigation.
HSMO says it responded September 29 with the sheriff’s department and Missouri Department of Agriculture. The department is examining whether unlicensed breeding occurred. That question remains unresolved in the material reviewed.
Care and custody are separate steps
HSMO says the animals are receiving examinations and care. They are not available for adoption until permanent custody is determined. An October 26 disposition hearing is scheduled; that is not a promised adoption date.
The organization describes earlier interventions at the property in 2000 and 2021. This article does not attribute any historical conviction to Berry: the sources reviewed do not establish that identity link.
