MDR1 is a transport protein problem, not a vague sensitivity label
The ABCB1 gene helps produce P glycoprotein, a transporter that limits entry of some substances into sensitive tissues including the brain. Washington State University lists Australian Shepherds among commonly affected breeds and provides a diagnostic test. Breed appearance or a mixed breed label cannot establish status; a laboratory result identifies the tested variant.
Do not turn an internet drug list into a stop list
Risk depends on the specific medication, dose, route and veterinary use. Some drugs associated with ABCB1 sensitivity are still used safely under veterinary direction at appropriate doses, while high exposures can be dangerous. Never skip parasite prevention, alter a prescription or induce vomiting solely because a name appeared on a social post. Call the prescribing clinic with the actual product and result.
Share the result before the dog needs urgent care
Keep a copy in the regular clinic record, emergency hospital record and a phone accessible file. Tell veterinarians before anesthesia, sedation, chemotherapy, antidiarrheal care or any new prescription. A collar tag can prompt staff to check the record, but it should not contain an oversimplified instruction such as “no medications.”

Possible toxicity needs immediate professional advice
Marked sleepiness, wobbliness, tremors, abnormal pupils, drooling, vomiting, blindness like behavior, seizures or coma after a medication exposure can be serious. Signs vary by drug and dose. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison service immediately with the package, strength, amount, time and the dog’s weight. Do not wait for the full list of signs.
- Use the laboratory name and exact genotype on the record.
- Photograph both sides of every medication package.
- Record the dose actually given, not only the prescribed dose.
- Include livestock dewormers or medication contaminated feces in exposure history.
- Make sure pet sitters know whom to call before giving any remedy.
A normal result has limits too
A clear test for the known ABCB1 variant does not guarantee that every drug is safe for that dog. Ordinary dosing errors, interactions, kidney or liver disease and unrelated adverse reactions remain possible. The result answers one pharmacogenetic question; it is not a universal medication clearance.
The safest system is boring and repeatable
Use one current medication list, one stored result and one rule: new drugs are checked by the treating professional who knows the indication and dose. That system is more useful than memorizing frightening lists. It lets an Australian Shepherd receive needed care while giving clinicians the breed specific information that can genuinely change care choices.

Household and farm exposures count as medication exposures
Australian Shepherds may encounter livestock dewormers, discarded tubes, medicated feed or feces from recently treated animals. Keep products secured and ask the relevant veterinarian about environmental risk when the dog lives or works around treated livestock. Never use a large animal formulation on a dog unless a veterinarian has specifically prescribed that product and dose.
When an exposure happens, do not rely on the dog’s genotype alone to predict the outcome. Product concentration, quantity, timing and co exposures matter. Bring the label or a clear photograph to the call. Fast, precise information gives the poison service or clinic more to work with than “it was probably a dewormer.”
