The research describes a tendency, not a personality flaw
Studies in Labrador Retrievers and Flat Coated Retrievers found that a POMC deletion was associated with greater food motivation, higher body weight and adiposity. A later study found that affected Labradors showed stronger food seeking behavior and used less energy at rest. These are group findings. They explain why food management may be genuinely harder for some Labs, but they cannot tell you whether the dog in front of you carries the deletion.
“Always hungry” and “suddenly ravenous” are different problems
A Lab who has searched for crumbs since puppyhood presents a different history from a dog whose appetite changed over two weeks. Increased hunger can accompany medication effects, diabetes, digestive or absorption disorders, parasites and other health problem. Weight loss despite eating, increased thirst or urination, diarrhea, vomiting, a swollen abdomen, weakness or a marked behavior change makes veterinary assessment more important. Do not let the breed stereotype close the case.
Measure the ration before changing it
Use the complete food label and the veterinarian’s body problem assessment as starting points rather than the dog’s reaction to an empty bowl. Cups vary, treats accumulate and several family members may each believe they are giving only a little. Weighing the daily ration can make the true intake visible. If weight is changing despite a measured plan, bring the record to the clinic instead of repeatedly cutting food without guidance.

Make the same food take longer to find
The 2024 POMC study’s authors suggested spreading a measured ration through the day and using puzzle feeders or scatter feeding so food takes longer to obtain. That does not mean adding unlimited snacks. Reserve part of the normal daily ration for training, sniffing games or a slow feeder, and choose a setup the dog can use without frustration or guarding.
- Store food and bins behind a physical barrier, not on the assumption that the dog will resist.
- Count chews, dental products and training food in the daily total.
- Keep children and guests from improvising extra portions.
- Track body weight and body problem on a consistent schedule.
- Call the clinic when hunger is new, escalating or paired with other changes.
Genetic testing is context, not a feeding prescription
A POMC result may explain why weight control requires more environmental management, but it does not calculate calories, rule out disease or justify an extreme diet. Energy needs change with age, neuter status, activity, health problem and individual metabolism. A veterinarian can help distinguish a long standing food driven temperament from a medically important appetite change and can set a safe weight plan.
What to bring to the appointment
Record the exact food, grams per day, treats, access to other pets’ bowls, recent medication changes, weight trend, stool quality, thirst and urination. A short video of persistent food searching may add context, but the feeding and weight record is usually more useful than saying the dog is “typical for a Lab.” The goal is not to blame genes or willpower; it is to make hunger, health and food access manageable.

Separate food motivation from feeding distress
A food motivated Lab can still wait, disengage and settle when those skills are taught under manageable problems. Frantic guarding, swallowing non food objects, breaking containers or escalating when access is blocked raises a broader safety question. Prevent access first and discuss pica, anxiety or guarding with the appropriate professional rather than assuming the POMC variant explains every food related behavior.
Progress is better measured by stable body problem, fewer successful raids and calmer routines than by whether the dog stops looking interested in food. A genetically influenced appetite may remain visible. The household plan succeeds when it keeps nutrition appropriate and the dog safe without turning every interaction into a battle over eating.
