Senior Dog Blood Work: What Does It Actually Show?

A senior dog panel is usually a group of tests, not one verdict. A complete blood count describes blood cells; a chemistry panel measures substances associated with organs, metabolism, proteins, and electrolytes; and urinalysis adds information that blood alone cannot provide. Results must be interpreted with the dog's history, physical examination, medications, hydration, sample quality, and earlier values. A flag outside the laboratory range is not automatically a diagnosis, while results inside the range do not rule out every disease.

The most useful way to read the report is in layers: why the tests were run, which sample was analyzed, whether several related values form a pattern, and whether that pattern changed from the dog's own baseline. Do not try to diagnose one highlighted abbreviation in isolation. Ask the veterinarian who examined the dog to connect the numbers to the clinical picture.

What is usually inside a senior panel?

Panel names are not standardized. A clinic's “senior screen” may include a CBC, chemistry, electrolytes, urinalysis, thyroid hormone, heartworm or tick borne disease screening, or other tests selected for region and risk. Another clinic may use the same name for a smaller bundle. Ask for the exact components instead of assuming that “full blood work” includes urine, thyroid, or infectious disease tests.

The CBC looks at cells, not “the whole blood test”

Red blood cell measurements help the clinician recognize anemia, increased red cell concentration, and clues about cell size or hemoglobin. White blood cell counts and the differential show numbers and types of immune cells; their pattern may support inflammation, stress responses, infection, marrow problems, or other processes. Platelet results relate to clot formation, but automated counts can be falsely low when platelets clump, which is one reason a blood smear estimate may matter.

A CBC finding often starts the next question rather than ending it. “Low red cells” does not explain whether blood was lost, cells were destroyed, or production fell. The veterinarian may use reticulocyte counts, cell morphology, chemistry, urine, imaging, or other tests to separate those mechanisms.

Chemistry values work in patterns

Chemistry panels contain measured substances and enzyme activities. BUN, creatinine, and sometimes SDMA contribute to kidney assessment, but hydration, muscle mass, diet, medications, and urine concentration affect interpretation. ALT and ALP are commonly called “liver values,” yet an increase does not by itself measure liver function or identify a diagnosis. Glucose, albumin, total protein, calcium, sodium, potassium, and other entries likewise need context and companion results.

Avoid assigning each abbreviation to one disease. An enzyme can rise because cells released more of it or because production was induced; a waste product can accumulate for more than one reason; and two mildly shifted values may be more informative together than one dramatic looking flag. The clinician also considers how sick or well the dog appears.

Why urine belongs beside kidney related blood values

Cornell recommends obtaining urine with a chemistry profile whenever possible, especially during an initial assessment. Urine specific gravity shows how concentrated the sample is at that moment. Sediment, dipstick findings, protein, glucose, ketones, blood, cells, crystals, and bacteria add other clues. Collection method and time since collection affect what a result means.

Blood and urine answer a paired question. For example, kidney associated waste products are interpreted differently when urine is appropriately concentrated than when it is unexpectedly dilute. Protein on a dipstick may need sediment review and a urine protein to creatinine ratio. Suspected infection may require a culture from a sample collected in a way that limits contamination.

A reference interval is not a pass/fail line

Laboratories establish reference intervals from a population of apparently healthy animals using particular methods and equipment. A small proportion of healthy results will fall outside those limits, and disease can exist before a value crosses one. Different laboratories may use different methods, units, and intervals, so comparing a number copied from another website can be misleading.

  • A high or low flag tells you where the result sits relative to that laboratory's interval; it does not state the cause
  • The size of the change, related results, symptoms, and sample quality affect significance
  • Fasting status, stress, exercise, dehydration, lipemia, hemolysis, medications, and supplements can influence some measurements
  • A repeat test may check whether an unexpected result persists or was affected by temporary conditions
  • A normal screening panel cannot exclude every early, localized, neurologic, orthopedic, cardiac, or gastrointestinal problem

Trends can be more useful than a lone snapshot

Keep complete reports with dates and laboratory ranges. The dog's own repeated results can reveal direction that a single snapshot cannot.

A baseline taken while the dog is well gives future results a personal comparison. A value can remain inside the laboratory range while moving steadily away from that dog's usual level. Conversely, a stable mild abnormality already evaluated by the veterinarian may carry a different meaning from a sudden new change.

Compare reports only with their dates, units, intervals, laboratory, symptoms, and medication context attached. Do not plot selected values while discarding the rest of the panel. Ask whether the change exceeds expected analytical and biological variation and whether it alters the plan.

Before the sample, ask what preparation is needed

Follow the clinic's instructions about fasting; do not fast a diabetic, very small, frail, or medically complex dog without specific direction. Keep water available unless the treating veterinarian explicitly says otherwise. Bring every prescription, supplement, flea or tick product, and recent medication change. Tell the team about vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, urination, appetite, weight, energy, and anything unusual during collection.

Ask before collecting urine at home. The team may want a fresh free catch sample, may need a sterile sample for culture, or may collect urine during the visit. Note the collection time and method. Do not reuse a food container or delay an uncomfortable dog's urination to obtain a specimen.

Seven questions to ask when results return

  1. Which findings matter for my dog, and which flags are likely incidental?
  2. Do several values form one pattern, or are they probably separate issues?
  3. How do the urine results change the interpretation of the chemistry panel?
  4. How do these values compare with my dog's earlier baseline?
  5. Could sample quality, fasting, hydration, medication, or supplements have affected them?
  6. Is the next step observation, a repeat panel, a more specific test, imaging, or treatment?
  7. What symptoms or timing should move the planned recheck earlier?

Ask for a copy of the complete report and the clinician's interpretation, not just “everything looks good” or a list of red flags. The goal is not to become the dog's laboratory diagnostician. It is to understand what question was asked, what the evidence suggests, what remains uncertain, and what happens next.
