Clayton County transferred 202 dogs to Cane 9 Rescue & Sanctuary between February and June 2026, according to records examined by Atlanta News First in a September 30 investigation. The report asks what happened after the dogs left the county shelter.

What the donation figures show

The station linked 143 dogs to fundraising campaigns associated with more than $56,000 in pledges and donations. It could not establish how much money Cane 9 actually received. Those figures describe fundraising activity, not a verified payment total or a finding that funds were stolen.

The oversight question

A Clayton County police captain told the station there is no mandated procedure to follow up after animals are transferred to a licensed rescue or adopter. That gap is the focus of the new report; a transfer record alone does not establish an individual dog’s later condition or whereabouts.

Charges remain allegations

Citing Douglas County warrants, Atlanta News First reports that Jennifer Caneup and Joshua Caneup each face 16 animal cruelty counts and two aggravated animal cruelty counts. The charges are not convictions. The 202 transfers and 143 fundraiser dogs are overlapping reporting categories, not totals to add together.
