The most defensible answer is that dogs notice cues, not that they possess a general human concept of danger. A dog might respond to crying, an unfamiliar body position, faster breathing, a change in gait, the absence of a normal command, or volatile compounds in human odor. Which cue mattered is usually impossible to identify from a single event.
What a dog may be detecting
Dogs receive several streams of information at once. They hear pitch, volume, breathing, and movement sounds; see facial expression, posture, speed, and balance; smell chemical changes; and learn the sequence of ordinary household routines. Look for the smallest observable description: “barked when I sat on the floor and stopped after I stood” is more useful than “knew I was in danger.”

A trained assistance response is a different claim
