Johnathan Meyers, 31, was arrested September 29 after investigators alleged prolonged neglect of his dog Tanner in Oak Hill, Florida. WFLA reports that he faces aggravated animal cruelty, resisting officers and drug paraphernalia charges. He denied neglect, according to deputies cited by the outlet. The allegations have not been proven in court.

From a stray dog call to emergency treatment

Volusia County says an animal control officer responding to a stray dog call found Tanner weak and covered in sores and infection. A man identified himself as Tanner’s owner, acknowledged that he could not adequately care for him and surrendered him. Shelter staff began emergency treatment and nutritional support while officers documented his condition.

ClickOrlando’s September 30 account of the arrest affidavit puts Tanner’s weight at just over 33 pounds, against an estimated healthy weight of about 60 pounds. It reports a veterinary body condition score of 1 out of 9, severe dehydration and untreated infections. The outlet also reports that Meyers has bonded out of jail.

Recovery does not mean adoption is open yet

WFLA reports that Tanner has gained weight and his infections have improved during treatment. The county expects a full recovery and eventual adoption, but has not announced an availability date. That expectation is a care team assessment, not a completed recovery.

For suspected cruelty or neglect in unincorporated Volusia County, Oak Hill or Pierson, the county lists Animal Services at 386 248 1777. Tanner’s future adoption status should be checked directly with the shelter.
